Probate/mortgage extension

Hi all

Currently in process of buying a house and have just found out one of the owners died yesterday. We now have to wait for probate to be granted and for the estate to be distributed/sorted out.

Our mortgage offer expires the end of April. How do you go about getting an extension when you don't know how long you will need to extend by? Confused

Ask your lender for as long as possible?

Did the owners own the house as joint tenants or tenants in common? If joint tenants then it immediately reverts to the owner who is alive so you might not need to wait for probate - check with your solicitor.

Otherwise then ask for 6 months, that's about average for probate (assuming you want to wait that long for this house).
