Talk to me about alternatives to uPVC windows/doors....

We’re about to embark on a big renovation. The house has some really nice quality wooden double glazed windows so we’re looking to preserve those (painting/replacing glazing where necessary etc).
But we will need two new windows at the back of the house along with sliding patio doors. Was just going to get uPVC, but I’m wondering about alternatives that would be (a) more attractive and (b) better from an environmental perspective? Not really sure where to start.... are non-uPVC alternatives much more expensive?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts/tips. We’re on the south coast.

I think our sliding doors are aluminium and it nice as the profiles are thinner than uPVC. However, if you've got wooden windows, I'd look to match those with new wooden windows rather than introduce other materials.
