Ideas for a Study Room?

Hi everyone,

My twins have come to that age where they will be starting high school in September. At the moment they don't have any space to work, aside from the kitchen table.
I have a spare room that's just used for clutter which I'd like to move to the attic. It will be an ideal room to convert into a study room. I can also use it in the day for my business and clients.
So I'm looking for ideas where we would like a lot of storage/desk space and something that looks professional, possibly fitted furniture.

P.S. not looking for Argos or Ikea

Get a local carpenter to make you something bespoke?

Have you looked on Houzz? Usually a good supply of ideas.

Are they going to work side by side or have separate work stations? What wiring do you need for a computer or even two computers? Where is the printer going? Would they want a desk each and storage for each child. Don’t forget task lighting and lots of sockets. A pin board might also be useful for homework/school timetables and other notices.

Lots of companies sell decent workstations. John Lewis for a start. I think working out how they will use the room is key. One wall each? Like a galley kitchen. You do need to think what will work for you too. This might depend on what your clients expect and what service you offer.

Your DCs might prefer to be in the kitchen of course! They might not like being shut away.

I work from home so for me office was important, the desk itself needed to be large. I had a length of kitchen worktop fitted. It has holes cut in for cables and proper plastic discs added and a pull up power cable for temporary things that need plugging in.
You'll be surprised how many power sockets you need. I have 2 for laptops, router, WiFi extender, printer, shredder, phone chargers, tablet chargers (I work in IT so have many devices!!)
My honest opinion is spend the money on proper wiring in the room and comfortable chairs...the rest really isn't as important

Just wondered into my office and realised a few other bits in there, phone line so that's another plug socket plus I have Philips hue lights. For the office I have the ambiance ones because the settings like Energizer's and read really are fantastic. If im working for a long time being able to change the tone of lighting helps keep me on task. Have main lights and task lights for each desk. If you've budget to spare as silly as it may seem add a Google home, my kids use ours all the time for homework - primarily around what does this word mean and alternative words. Seems noone uses a dictionary any more!
Finally a well stocked stationery cupboard, pens, pencils and rulers because they will loose them on a daily basis!!

My office in this house has an awkward shape, so I had a custom desk and fitted bookcases/cupboards from Neville Johnson. It looks lovely, is very practical (built in trunking for wiring for example), and has lasted well. But it is totally fixed.
OTOH we have just converted what was the playroom to Ds's study (he's 11) and used a mix of Ikea (desk top, drawer pedestals), a custom built floor to ceiling bookcase and matching storage unit plus a futon. It looks great, is practical, but can be moved around and changed as we need - for instance expanding the desktop, putting the desk on a different wall. It's a much more adaptable system as your boys grow

Yes, I'm looking for a good, bespoke fitted furniture company that can handle the entire project. I'd like to get the job done as soon as possible and at an affordable price.

I have a basic idea of what requirements I want, just need a designer to advise me on how to go further. Does anyone have recommendations for a company they have used?

What do you mean by affordable? Doesn't usually correlate with bespoke.

I'd recommend making sure you have lots of sockets and the ones with USB points are particularly useful.

I would just get it fitted. Bookcase along one wall. Large desk along the other with shallow drawers underneath the desktop. You can use cork boards/wire mess for wall organisation and little buckets/cups etc. For pens and things. Most importantly choose good light and calming colours like white or green. Absolutely no wall paper.

We had ours fitted by Capital Bedrooms. I'm an accountant working from home and a new mum so needed something similar to you. They were the best out of sharps, neville and one local trader we were quoted from.

I'm so happy with the quality and it gives that premium look which is important when my clients come to my home. However at the same time I know that in 5-10 years my son can use it for his study needs.

Their designer will guide you through all necessary sockets and so on, so don't feel the need to go in with a detailed plan. You just have to tell them how you want to work and they will design it for you, then go from there. Much better prices because they make it on site and it was installed in a week.

I phoned them up and booked a free design consultation. It went very well and they are a very lovely group of people. I have decided to go ahead with the project. Thanks a lot!
