Kitchen layout help - is there enough room by the sink

Just at the final stages of our kitchen design and having a wobble about the space around the sink.

We are having a mantel built in to hide the extractor and so we can have a shelf behind the range. Does this look enough space for washing up, food prep etc around the sink and hob?

The island is big and will have a wooden top so don't want sink or hob on there. We could lose the mantel design if not enough worktop but ideally I will keep.

I don’t know what you mean by the mantle but do you have a 60cm space anywhere? We have 90cm on our main work area next to job and I would struggle with any less (I often use the island.

It's a fake chimney breast sitting on the worktop. Doesn't take the whole worktop, about half the width. I have 60cm to the left of the sink and then an l shape to the right which is 60cm by 120cm.

Looks similar space wise to ours. We use the island for food prep.

Not what you asked I appreciate (I think I'd want more space but I'm "flamboyant" with a chopping knife) but that gap between the wall and the island (40cm maybe?) would drive me crazy as I'd want to be able to walk around an island, not have to walk past the oven, sink etc all the time. But if it's just 1 or 2 people living in the house I guess it's not so important ?

Thank you! Not sure what is going on with drawing - gap between wall and island will be either 90cm (with 120 cm round the island on the other two sides) or 100cm with 110cm on the other sides.

Agree 40cm would be madness (there are 5 of us!)

The island isn’t that big. Mine is 3.4m x 1.4m so has room for hob and an oven under.

The island surface being wood will take a hammering. It will end up being your serving area too. You just don’t have enough space around the hob and oven to serve into dishes and plates for a family of 5.

You can only sit 2 at the breakfast bar. Is that right and is it worthwhile having that at all? I think it’s all a bit impractical but I like space and decent working areas.

Hmmm ok. The Island is 2.1m by 1.2m so I think we can have three stools which is fine. Happy with the wood taking a hammering, we don't want it to be pristine.

I'm wondering about losing the mantel though as I think it will be more useful to have the space next to the hob. If we do that we will have 1.2m on one side and 80 cm on the other side, plus the island which feels ok? Can't have much more than that as it's just not big enough!

I think the mantel could look overbearing. I’d rather have the worktop space as I tend to spread out when cooking.

What about something like this? You'd get a similar look but you wouldn't lose worktop space.

I would lose the "mantle", they are a very contrived and bulky way to disguise an extractor. Or don't bring it down to the worktop as suggested. Then move the range one unit to the right so it's a bit further from the corner, that gives you a working area.

I think it would look and feel more spacious without the mantel, with the broad sweep of flat surface round both walls.

Does the sink have a draining board? if not you might effectively lose 40+cm of your worktop to draining things.

It's not that it's too little worktop, it's a lovely big kitchen and will be amazing. But if I had that much space to design my perfect kitchen, I'd put a bit more worktop in. Blackgrouse's idea is good.
