Matt vs Gloss kitchen (esp DIY Kitchens)

My DH and I have designed a kitchen from DIY kitchens. I prefer matt, and the colour I want is only available in matt. He prefers gloss. Can anyone help us reach a decision? He’s worried the matt will look tired and dirty, and thinks the gloss will last longer. My colours are blue on the base units, white on the wall units. He wants dark grey base, white wall units.
Thanks

Both sound nice but, the key question is; who is going to be the main person polishing off the fingerprints/grubby marks? I'd propose that whichever of you will be doing that task gets final say on matt vs gloss. Grin

Matt. Gloss looks very dated now.

I have both.

My utility is gloss, my kitchen is matt.

My reasoning was: the utility is a small room, so maximising light is important. Gloss bounces around more light than matt. It's also going to be a workhorse of a room - I grow my own veg, which is muddy!-, so I wanted something really, really easy to clean (it is a myth that white gloss isn't easy to clean - it is - you just need to use spray polish and a microfibre cloth).

I had matt in the kitchen because I slightly prefer the look, and the kitchen is a "posher" space. It does look great, not tired and dirty at all. Paints and finishes have become so much more wipeable in the last few years.

We had gloss in old kitchen as it was tiny and we had to make most of space. In New kitchen I am tempted by matt

We have a kitchen from DIY kitchens. I am very impressed by the quality and the price. It is painted Oak ivory colour. Broadoak. It is Matt. Very easy to maintain and looks contemporary and modern.
I had a cream gloss in my previous house and didn't want it again due to it looking dated.

Gloss shows every greasy finger mark so unless you wipe it down all the time i think this would look dirtier than matt - ive had matt in 2 kitchens since 2000.

I don't understand the fingermarks thing, unless you have push doors, in which case I totally see it. There are handles that you use, right? So you shouldn't be getting fingers on cupboards??!

Any kitchen needs a regular wipedown, gloss is the same as any other in that regard. It really isn't that hard to keep looking absolutely pristine. I had the cheapest gloss kitchen in my house when I moved in (it was an ex-rental) and the one thing that was easy to keep clean was the gloss surfaces. Everything else was a mare, especially the bloody gas cooker. I had a party when that went.

Also don't understand the fingerprints ? You should not have to touch the doors if you have handles? I have a newly fitted cream gloss... absolutely love it...I had matt cream doors before this one and it does look cleaner !

Finger prints can be issue on both matt & gloss finishes (if they are lacquered) & especially with darker colours. Personally I think matt looks more expensive & is less likely to date.

QuitMoaning · 29/01/2018 16:58

Do you have small children? That is where the fingerprints will come from!

My son is at uni so less of an issue with me but I still went for matt as I personally prefer it. My friend has gloss and I can see where it isn't polished so easily, I find matt more maintainable.

mrsglowglow · 29/01/2018 19:35

Ours is matt from DIY kitchens and I love it. No issues with marks or fingerprints. We went for matt as the kitchen gets full sun for most of the afternoon and thought gloss might be too dazzling.

Loving the colour coding to help find the appliances....

Reminds me of another reason why I don't want integrated!

NyaNinjago · 29/01/2018 20:16

Matt. I love the gloss but think it will date much quicker and it is so hard to keep clean.

Thanks everyone. Have read him the replies and he’s now happy with matt. Job done! Smile
