Garage Conversion

We’re looking to convert our garage into living space. The garage is attached to the house. I am aware of all the regs regarding insulation etc but what I can’t seem to find information on is the foundations.

If the garage doesn’t have the same footings as the house does it need reinforcement throughout or just where the door was and new wall would be?

Has anyone converted and have any ballpark costs? We can’t get quotes in yet as we aren’t due to complete on the purchase until March but we’re trying to budget and costs jobs now.

I think you need a structural engineer, an architect or a surveyor to tell you the answer to this question.

It depends how it's been built. Some garages are strong enough to have another floor built on top of them (does yours?) and others have very little in the way of foundations at all. Unless you have the original plans for the garage then someone probably has to dig down and see what's below the ground. Sorry!

Ok that sounds like a reasonable suggestion to dig down (didn’t know if that could be done!) food for thought and there... thank you
