Resurfacing side board and dresser

I have a sideboard and a 'welsh' dresser in our livingroom/kitchen

The surface esp by the microwave is being damaged

When we can afford it I intend to replace the 'real' wood worksurface with black/patterned laminate & I intended to buy a piece of worksurface for the top of each (routing out so that it sits over the existing top) - But I am concerned that if I buy worksurface now, when it comes to the rest of the kitchen them patterns may have changed.......

But I need to do something now, whether short or long term

So should I tile them? Small or large tiles? Not sure how it will look & will it be bumpy

Cover them with oil cloth/vinyl table cloth?

Cover with a very thin veneer?

Something else? If so what?

Painting the whole things would probably be the best option. However if you just want to cover the work surfaces you can buy sticky back thin vinyl on a roll in Homebase in various colours and designs. Might be an ok temporary solution?

I'd be concerned about getting it off if I wanted to use it in another room in the future

Still dithering - thanks for your reply
