Buying land from the council?

Our garden backs onto a park. There are a couple of trees on the very edge of the park, and they are pushing our fence down. The council doesn't maintain the trees at all.

What's the chance that I could buy, say, a two-foot strip of land just outside my fence, then re-fence so that the trees were within my garden? I would want to maintain the trees and keep them.

And how would I go about this? Where should I start at the council?

The council will have a tree officer who looks after TPOs, etc - I'd start there.

It will be the councils estate team. They usually manage council land and can advise you whether it would be a possibility. You would likely also require planning permission to change the use of the land to domestic if they let you buy it.
