Kitchen layout help

Hi all,

I posted here a few months back but can't find the thread ....

I'm tearing my hair out re kitchen layout for a new build and would love your suggestions - maybe a combination of all 3 would be the best option!

Anyway, we will be having the hob closer to the wall to allow for more seating space on peninsula - it's measuring about 2.7m at the moment. I also don't want to close off the entrance point too much into the kitchen with high units either side so won't probably have the oven on the right of the sink wall.

I like the third one best I think!

One is good but I would move the oven so it's on that back row, I don't think it's great being next to the door!

Last one but make sure your fridge freezer is under the same worktop as the hob or sink rather than alongside the tall units.

I would do the third but without the units on the first wall at all and put in a very nice side board instead.

The tall units on the left were going to house a full height fridge, full height freezer and a food larder.

Is this not the right place for them? We were thinking about moving the fridge along side the oven (in plan 3) but that would mean my sink wall is only 4 units wide.

You'll be forever walking backwards and forwards between fridge sink and hob if they're all within a couple of steps it's much easier!

I like the third one too. Something feels off about putting the oven so close to the window, but I'm probably just associating ovens with hobs.

Don’t put the hob near the window. It is far better where it is. Make the peninsular wider! Or put your seating around a table end to the peninsular and have it made out of wood to make it look different from the Work surface. Put the seats around that. I get four around mine and it’s about 1200mm diameter. You can make the peninsular itself a bit shorter so you can get the table in. I have storage under mine with rounded doors. It keeps children away from the hob so is safer.

I have a large kitchen. Walking a bit is an inevitable consequence of a large kitchen. I have two fridges in a wall of cupboards. Coffee machine between them and the freezer under that. The double Belfast sink is against a wall but the is built out from the wall to get away from straight lines.

I do have an oven next to a doorway and it’s not an issue but my second oven is under the hob in my island.

As long as you have a reasonable Work triangle, you will be fine. I would never have a built under fridge. Ones in a bank of units that are essentially eye level/waist high are so much easier to use and two are total bliss! Highly recommended if you cook a lot and have a bigger family.

Have you got any spare space on that left hand wall? If so perhaps switch the fridge and freezer for an american FF (to narrow them) and put the oven on that wall too. Or move the freezer elsewhere.

I'm sticking with my reluctance to put an oven next to wall and window. I think they'll get mucky, and you need elbow room around an oven when manoeuvring a turkey in and out. Also if that's where your grill is think sausages and bacon spitting. Much better to have more space around it if you can, I think.

Due to the slope in the wall on the right (the side of the house is at an angle) the oven won't be directly beside the wall. Hard to explain but we'll need to move it 30cm or so to the left to allow the oven door to open! I appreciate the idea though, I'll have a think to where we could better move it. We did consider under the hob but I do like the idea of an eye-level oven.

Definitely don't want an american fridge/freezer! We fill 2 fridges as it is with our weekly shop so will need a full height larder fridge and separate freezer.

Fair enough. I love the breakfast bar with the deeper open shelf on the right, and I think you're right to go for that bank of tall units on the left.

I like the third drawing as it looks the best but not sure there would be enough worktop. You could put in shallower units behind the full height units up to the door to get more work top ie space for kettle toaster and stuff you won't necessarily want near sink or clogging up the island. I am not keen on hobs or anything else on islands (like sinks) but I suppose that is personal preference and you don't have a lot of room to put it anywhere else.
