I need help designing/making a cupboard/Media centre thingie

I have a chimney breast type arrangement in the lounge end of the kitchen - it actually has the water meter in a cupboard

I am planning on putting a TV on the wall and using the hollow space behind the plaster board to hide all the wires

If I put the rest of the media stuff there it would all be contained - but the cupboard needs to be moveable so we can read the water meter

& I have one of those big bass speakers that needs to go on the floor

So I am trying to work out how to make it (or buy it if they exist)

a kitchen cupboard might work - but how to make it moveable? Casters won't allow for the bass speaker underneath - hinging wouldn't be ideal as the wall is plasterboard & I'm already worried about fixing the TV up there

Does anyone understand enough to offer any suggestions?

Ok, some thoughts

  • Are you sure you want a media centre in a kitchen? Smoke, grease, variations in temperature aren't great for electronics. Or for DVDs/CDs etc. You say the "lounge end" though, so maybe it's far enough away (and your extraction good enough) for this not to be an issue?
  • Can you put the bass speaker on the unit with casters, with enough cabling that it can be wheeled out when necessary? I think speakers are supposed to be isolated from the floor?
  • Could you move the water meter? And have something properly built in? This would be the nicest solution.

You could cut a hole big enough in the back of the cupboard so that you can read the meter dial or reach the stop valve. then use the cut out piece as a a small door with a hinge so the cupboard wouldn't need to be moved.

Interesting ideas - it's my only lounge so media has to be here

This is what it looks like currently

Can the boom/bass box go in a cupboard? I thought they had to go on the floor?

What's inside the cupboard door (besides the watermeter). Is there any reason why the door is that size rather than larger? If the door can be enlarged (made taller) you may be able to fit all the gubbins above the water meter?

Don't forget, if you put everything behind a door your remote controls may not work..

The wall is about 4 inches behind the door I think and the stopcock

I reckon that was the smallest door in that kitchen range when the previous people did it

So no room...
