Knock down old extension and start again or mend and make do?

Currently considering putting in an offer on an old house (100+ years) in North East Scotland, the house is absolutely stunning besides needing modernising and new windows, some damp work etc - all the joys that come with an older house.
We would be falling over our own feet to rush into buying it but there's one stickler we can't agree on and if it would be affordable. The god awful extension at the rear of the house, full of rot and constructed using less than efficient materials. We're talking fibreboard everywhere and wires on every wall.

Not a particularly large extension, is say it's 5m x 4m at best which would be utilised as the kitchen/dining room if we were to go ahead.

My question is has anyone knocked down an old existing extension and rebuilt rather than patching up and making do? Is there a massive difference in cost?

Thanks in advance MNers x
