How many houses did you leaflet and how many call backs did you receive?

After finally persuading DH to put our home on the market and accepting an offer, the property maker in my area (SE London suburb) has completely dried up. There is a fairly small area where I want and can afford to live, so I’m resorting to leafletting. I feel like I’ve given everyone in the area my phone number .

Please can you give me a little bit of hope by sharing your leafletting stories with me?

We are currently looking for a bungalow. I have leafleted around 80 that we like. There are one or two in every few streets so compiling the address list was hard work. After a week of leafletting, we have had 4 calls. None of these callers actually wanted to sell yet.

Today I had another idea. My current property is on a very popular road. I went into various estate agents, and said that if they found me a bungalow they could sell my house for me. There are many agents around here. This gives them a big incentive to phone me first when a suitable property comes on the market, but before they put it on Rightmove.

We posted 147 letters through doors and had about 15 replies, ended up buying what we hope is our forever home from one of the respondents. Good luck, and be patient, house buying is all about timing.

It was suggested to us that we use bright yellow paper to stand out and to handwrite the letter (we photocopied our handwriting), so people could see we were not an agent in disguise In other words do an unsophisticated simple letter to look like the private buyer that you hope to be!

We bought our current house in this way as we had sold our house but nothing suitable in the very specific area we wanted had come up. I typed a letter out and posted it through about 200 doors. I got two responses and we are now living in one of them! Good luck.

Thank you so much for your replies. I’ve leafletted about 100 houses now and have run out of places I can afford/would like to live. I made them in word, but also hand wrote the ‘dear Home owner’ and ‘love from sex’ etc on each one. I’ve had one reply, from a lovely lady who told me she’s lived in the area for 34 yrs and is staying put, but her neighbours have moved out and are planning to sell.... it’s probably the biggest house in the nicest street I leafletted, so I’ve got everything crossed they’ll come back to me.

I’m not sure I’d respond to a letter that ended ‘love from Sex’, this might be where you are going wrong
