Painting metal handles

I'm searching for pocket door "handles" and cannot find ones I like in a black finish.

I'm wondering if Id be mad to buy some stainless steel ones I like the look of, and spray paint them black (with a metal paint obviously).

Will this work, or will I regret having handles that end up peeling/wearing away in a whiles time? As they will be inset, I imagine they won't be easy to remove and repaint.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

I've just refinished all of our old iron window hardware with "Plastikote" spray paint. It was very easy to get a good looking finish and the manufacture claims it will be ideal for handles. Time will tell of course.. ;)

Thank you so much, I will look in to this.

Hope your handles are (and stay) looking lovely.
