new slate hearth

Recently had a woodburner installed. Have treated the slate hearth with baby oil but it seems to be drying out blotchy. Anyone know what I may be doing wrong? Is it worth buying "proper" slate dressing from Stovax?

Thanks.

I've always used something called slate oil on mine. It gives it a soft sheen rather than being shiny (the slate is rough not smooth finish), but is always even.

Yes, you need slate oil. It costs about £15 for a big bottle that will last years and years.

Thanks. Just going out to shops so will look out for slate oil. We've got a good ironmongers that probably would stock it. Thanks again.

WD40 is what we've been recommended in the past - it really works (and you've probably got some already)
