Lockers?

In a moment of madness I bought a second hand tower of 6 lockers for my hallway on eBay. Picking them up at the weekend. They will fit and they will solve my storage problems.

However, they are not pretty or vintage. They are literally staffroom lockers with bright blue doors and a grey outside. How can I make them look at bit cooler?

My house is very retro/colourful, if that helps.

Not sure what I was thinking but they were so local and so cheap!

Thanks! I wish they were as cool as those ones! Will try to add a pic of something similar.

Told you they weren't cool!

What era retro? I immediately thought of hippy flower power VW campervan style painting.

IHeartKingThistle · 13/10/2017 10:57

We've got lots of 70s stuff, yes!

Though TBH if you're a retro/colourful type, they may need nothing at all! They are colourful, and, because they'll be out-of-place in a domestic environment, they are also a fun statement, so they will probably look really good as they are.

ShotsFired · 13/10/2017 11:02

Can you hang them horizontally?

I don't know where I am going with this but it might give them a slightly less utilitarian look

Ifailed · 13/10/2017 11:09

spray paint is cheap and cheerful, could may be colour-code them for different items?

IHeartKingThistle · 13/10/2017 11:27

I'm so glad no one (except DH) has given me a Hmm!

They have to go vertically; I have a perfect spot for them where there is currently an old telephone table with no telephone, just piles of junk mail. I'm thinking at least 1 locker needs to have a label that says 'junk mail that DH refuses to sort out ' on it.

It's the colour I don't like I think. We don't really do grey. But I'll never be able to spray paint those evenly. Maybe I'll cover the sides in Harry Potter posters and be done with it! Or start collecting fridge magnets like my grandad Grin

Suction hooks for bags of scarves/gloves/hats? Ikea do hooks that look like 70s flowers IIRC.

StepAwayFromCake · 13/10/2017 11:35

Give the dc free reign with a box of Sharpies?

IHeartKingThistle · 13/10/2017 11:49

They'd love that! I would not. They think it's going to be like American high school and are planning to decorate the insides, bless them.

I like the sound of flower hooks but bags will lead to clutter. Want the clutter IN the lockers!

I hate to be all "DIY on a budget top tips", but....Fablon?

Ttbb · 13/10/2017 12:19

Can you replace the doors with hand crafted sodden ones?

CrabappleCake · 13/10/2017 12:22

I'd spray paint - it's not that hard. They'd look really good.

IHeartKingThistle · 13/10/2017 12:27

Fablon is my kind of DIY! Need to have a Google!

I may well spray them. I did think about replacing the doors but can't justify the cost.

spray painting is not too bad, just take it slowly and build up layers. Don't hold the can too close and keep it moving.

Emily7708 · 13/10/2017 12:57

I really like them! If you check with your local car panel resprayers, they will spray paint them for you at a reasonable cost. We had an old study unit resprayed and it looks brand new and is so hardwearing.

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 13/10/2017 13:06

Car sprayers sounds a great idea, they have all the equipment and skills, so I'd definitely get a quote.

Sticky back plastic would probably be quicker and cheaper, but might not last long.

Vinyl stickers off E Bay? You might be able to get made to measure, otherwise trim to size.

MissDuke · 13/10/2017 15:38

Though I think the car sprayers is a brill idea personally :-)
