My quotes gone bust on day one!

Today is day one of my bathroom refit. Fitter had quoted me for ripping out suite, flooring, wall coverings, replacing suite, tiling, underfloor heating, false ceiling, spotlights, blah blah. Gave me an excellent price (in my uneducated opinion!)

Came home today and he's done a ton of work in the 4/5 hours he was here. But he's ripped off all the plaster board round my wall, so that it's just insulation showing. I guess it was damp behind the tiles.

How much extra is it likely to cost me for replacing that. I only have about £500 to spare over what he originally quoted and I'm worried this won't be the last unexpected expense.

The written details from him refer to "details of work and cost involved", and "cost of the above and to include supply of..."

No use of "quote" or "estimate".

We had this - it was impossible to get the old tiles off without taking the plasterboard. There were no additional costs for the replacement plasterboard, apparently this happens a lot so it had already been factored into the price.

I think I'm just shocked at how low he quoted me in the first place that i'm thinking it can't possibly go smoothly!

Just make sure he uses the green bathroom plasterboard and treats it before tiling.

£1500, which includes supply of ceiling lights, underfloor heating kit and electrician to wire it up.

When we did our bathroom the plaster board came off with the tiles nothing we could do about it. Just happened on one wall in our kitchen too. Has cost us a bit more but not much. Couldn't say exactly how much because there were other bit that had to be done which were unexpected too.

Yes, labour only, apart from what I mentioned. I've sourced the suite and tiles (using his discount) etc. Only partially tiling it, but still does seem too good to be true!

But he was recommend by my very particular colleague, so I'm confident he'll do a good job. Whole things coming in at about £2800 so far.

I've just binge watched 2 series of The 100K House - Tricks of the Trade (BBC IPlayer). The majority of people went over their quotes so I think it's pretty normal

Those folk are always minted, pulling money from nowhere. That's far from my situation, more the pity!

The 100k house title is misleading. That was the first series. This is the follow on 'Tricks of the Trade' and the people have much less cash. They have people who do run out of funds. They also show lots of money saving tips.

Good luck with the loo roll holder. Dh did our new ensuite over a year ago, he still hasn't found just the right loo roll holder. how hard can it be?

Jeez, ignore that! Dropped the phone mid post!

I can foresee many issues with the toilet roll holder choice! Too cheap, too expensive, too angular, too curvy! But anything will be a vast improvement on the one that's been in for ten years, badly fitted and slopes downwards, meaning I spend an unreasonable amount of time chasing escapee loo rolls around the floor while trying to keep my bum on the pan.

Have made what seems to me to be a grave error with my new shower!

Below is what I have bought, and my tiling so far.

You'll see the shower casing is black. I didn't notice this when ordering . It will be the only bit of black I'm my bathroom. The plumber has already ripped open the packaging and I'm not sure if he's used any of the pipe work or whatever (some bits sticking out the wall) so don't think I can return.

Do you think the black will look awful? Should I take the hit cost wise and order a different shower? Time is not on my side here!

I think it will be fine, you've got quite a dark mosaic tile nearby, so it won't stand out too much.

If I decide in a few months that I get the look of the shower, will it be easy enough to change with affecting the look of my tiles, i.e. no holes? Or will I need to replace exactly like for like, just different colour?
