Can you "upholster" a window sill?

This might be in the wrong topic so apologies.

I'm currently decorating one of the rooms in my house and it has a lovely deep set window and a big sill and a great view.
It would be perfect to be able to set up a little seating spot there with a couple of cushions on for reading/relaxing.

I'm on a shoestring budget but was thinking about putting some fabric over it (somehow?) or maybe some seating pads, like chair pads to make it comfortable but I am not sure how to do any of it.
I don't really want to damage the sill itself so would really prefer to have something I could take on off and wash rather than have my DC climbing all over it and potentially scratching/damaging the actual sill itself.

My initial thought is buy square chair pads and remove the ties (no need for them) and get a roll of self adhesive Velcro which I can then use to attach the pads to the sill and they can be then taken on/off as needed. And put a couple of cushions on the sides to make it comfier.

Any ideas/recommendations?

Have a window seat cushion made up - measure and get the foam cut to the correct size and make, or have made, a cover for it. You can order online, via eBay shops or a local supplier. Make sure the foam is dense enough or it won't be comfortable to sit on and have it covered in stockinette, which costs a couple of quid at most, but makes putting the cover on or taking it off easier and reduces friction between foam and cover and reduces wear on your chosen fabric. You might find it stays in place fine on its own, otherwise wide Velcro on the sill and the back of the cushion will help.

Get some cardboard and cut to fit the window. Pad with cushion stuffing and cover with desired fabric then Velcro strip to the window sill.

if you are on a budget then your cushion idea is probably best....foam for upholstery costs a farking fortune!!

we did this in a previous house, very low and deep (3ft+) sills ...the cats LOVED it. I'd just go down the cushion route next time.

I got a bench cushion out of high density foam cut to size and covered with stockinette for £12 from an upholsterer. Hardly a fortune.

A local supplier made a window seat pad for us - I had to buy the fabric for the cover, and she supplied the foam and made the cover. She also provided us with a gripper, like you put under rugs, which holds it in place, even with two boisterous small children. I think that Next sell rug grippers that you can cut to size but local carpet/rug shops may sell them more cheaply.

I had large box cushions made for our windows from high density upholstery foam. Very cheap to do. One cost £15 and the other £11 + VAT. Order the foam cut to size - so much easier than trying to save money by cutting it yourself - and have it covered in stockinette for a couple of pounds extra so you can get covers on and off easily. I used www.anyfoam.co.uk for the foam but there are other online places that do it. I paid to have the covers professionally made because I’m not very good at sewing but I could have saved money by making the covers myself from a cheap end of roll piece of upholstery fabric (check out Laura Ashley sales). I then just added regular cushions on top to lean against at the sides. If you can sew you could probably make it all for less than £30 all in.
