New stair case

We want to replace a staircase. Current staircase is too steep so we want to use the existing staircase plus some of the hallway. So that the stair case decends it's current route then bend at a right angle into the hallway. We need something very basic. Just the stairs that will be carpeted and a rail on the wall so no banisters, hardwood etc. Any idea how much it may cost?

Following as this is our plan too, we know we're going to have to change the bulk head in the bedroom (not sure wether this is a factor in yours) therefore adding more cost
But ours are awfully steep too.

I think if you are taking out the entire thing, it's a major job. Labour of a decent joiner and mate would be, I guess, £200-400 a day (depending where you are) and I guess it would probably take at least a couple of days, possibly more? I don't think you'd get much change from £2k even with a really cheap softwood staircase, though I could be wrong. Major changes may require building regs signoff too.

Thank for the reply. Do you know whether we would actually have to remove the existing one? Or could the new one just be built over the top?

We're doing similar although we're reducing the staircase footprint by changing the platform midway to winders to gain enough space to make way for a hallway/corridor.

Question, softwood sounds the cheapest, but what type of wood would people use if they wanted a good quality staircase? I mean one that can stand the rigours of years with of abuse without developing creaks etc?

We've come out about £3k (partners in the trade so got good deals) we're going for oak and glass sides and as we're carpeting the steps they'll just be normal (whatever they use) wood as you can tell partner sorts everything out I just pick the pretty things 😂

We replaced a straight run with a less steep one (we took space out of the upstairs landing). Made in MDF with pine rails etc - price from builders merchants matched by local store. Staircase was around £700, two days of one carpenter's time to fit. In the SE. Just need to make sure head space remains ok - ours isn't quite building regs but it's better than it was.

Ours was circa £4500 but stair treads are oak and so are newel posts. It is also fairly wide at the bottom with curved steps so it was specially designed for us. We don't have a carpet on the stairs and I know this doesn't suit everyone. We increased headroom and took part of the hall to ensure we could get furniture up and down! Headroom is vital. There is cost in actually designing a staircase to fit an existing tight space. We used a staircase specialist and they still made an error with measurements and the first attempt did not fit.

No, you cannot build over an existing one. It will need to be removed and replaced with the new one.
