I'm freshening up some white gloss woodwork, I've sanded it slightly and wiped it all down with sugar soap. Reckon I can get away with one coat as it's white on white?

It's unlikely in my experience. It does depend upon what you are willing to tolerate. I really don't like paint finishes that grin through....my wife would not give it a second thought!
