Front door make over!

I'm planning on making over our front door (live in a tenement flat) but wondered if anyone could give me an idea of what's sensible to pay.

It's currently a flat door with no moldings in a really ugly colour. If like to get someone to add panel moldings and strip and repaint it, and add a brass number.

Anyone know how much this might cost? Definitely not something I will do myself as fairly pregnant atm..!! TIA Smile

A painter might charge £100 per day on average. Is it a day's work? Might be cheaper to sand down rather than strip the door.
Pinterest is great for modern and traditional front door ideas.

Thank you. Yes probably a day's work I think - would the painter add the moldings or would I need to find them myself?

I've just painted my front door and it needed three coats which had to be done on three separate days. Which will make the whole thing more expensive as they will have to keep going back.

I'm wondering whether you might be better off buying a whole new door cost wise. I think I spent about £50 just on the undercoat and paint.

I've just done mine. Definitely don't get a new door, that will cost a lot.

We painted it white (house is pale grey) and added a brass kick plate (it already had brass knocker and handle) and then have taken down the horrible black lanterns that were too small and have added lovely brass lanterns each side of the door in the right proportions. If you look on pinterest there is a lot of guidance about sizing of lanterns in comparison to door size. You need to go surprisingly large to make it look elegant. I then have two large white hydrangeas, one each side of the door and my autumn leaf wreath on the door.

Next summer we are taking off the rather flimsy open porch and adding a much larger one which will frame the door nicely.

My door is lovely...then you step inside and see the bomb site.

You should be able to buy stripwood mouldings very cheaply OP. A 2m length costs about £5 (depending on the sizing and shape you're going for)

You are probably right, I just meant if she's doesn't want to do any of it herself and the door is a flat one and will need some additions.

In theory I would always also explore just getting new one but having looked at the cost of front doors and nearly fallen off my chair I'd recommend a makeover unless its structurally unsound.

3luckystars · 16/09/2017 10:34

A new door is about €1500 here.
I would love a picture of what you have now and what kind of door you would like to have.

Can you see anything similar online that you could post, I just can't picture what you are describing.

I'd say you could definitely do something yourself. Especially the painting, thin thin THIN coats of paint though!

it is very likely a fire-resisting door (the glass should be too) so if changed, you would need an FD door, letterflap, hinges etc. They cost a matter of hundreds, not a thousand.

pomadas87 · 16/09/2017 15:54

Yes I'm not looking to get a new door, just update the existing one. The letterbox etc look fine to me so I don't think I need to replace those? I just need the moldings, paint, and someone to do the work?

Sorry I took so long to reply.

Could you try something like this: i.pinimg.com/236x/8f/01/09/8f010979df1d60291e5ef026cb4392c2--black-doors-brown-front-doors.jpg

The kind of door you have posted as liking doesn't look like they have the kind of molding you just add on - they are panelled doors which are built an entirely different way.

If you are happy with the look of the one 3lucky posted then you can achieve that by just adding molding, though.
