Can I paint ceramic floor tiles?

I'm doing my house up as cheaply as possible and have followed the painted floor threads and am going to chance it...they aren't in great condition, but surely that's the point of a paint cover up?

My problem is the kitchen tiles are sound, but old-fashioned, so I want to paint the lot, but the floor paint tin says not for ceramic tiles... any idea why? Does it flake quickly or something?

I've googled it. Mixed opinions, it sounds difficult to do it properly. The problem seems to be the paint unlikely to adhere to the tile.

people walk on floors. This will wear off the paint and it will look a hundred times worse.
