Decorating common area of property being sold

Hello,
My neighbour, with whom we share the Freehold, is expecting to close the sale of his flat at the end of September.
I have been wanting to paint the common entrance for a long time and I just asked him and he said to go ahead, he has no problem.
I told my husband and he thinks that out of courtesy, we should ask the person buying their property.
I agree it would be nice, but at the end of the day, this person doesn't own the property yet, and we all know the sale could fall through at the last minute.
Does anyone know if I'm legally allowed to go ahead with the work? I would be paying for it myself.
Thanks in advance

I would wait until the sale completes and the buyer has moved in. They'll be more inclined to want it to look good when they've just moved in and will probably offer to contribute.

Check your lease and any other documents for how maintenance of common areas is to be dealt with.

I would also wait for the new owners, but because of a more practical reason, because during the move they might leave marks and it is perhaps better to decorate after the moving out/moving in has happened.

Yes, I guess waiting two more weeks won't kill me.
Thanks, seems like my husband wins this one.... ha, ha ha...

I would paint it before they turn up.

Otherwise the new people might not be interested or might want questionable colours there :)

Definitely paint now

I would paint now too.

Madness - wait until they are there and discuss how to deal with shared costs.
