planning to install a corner bifold door with a permanent steel post

Hi All,

We are planning a dining / living room ground floor extension extending towards our rear garden (South east extension). The idea is to have a 3 m bifold door in the south wall (3.36 m) followed by a steel corner post followed by a 1 m glass pane on the east facing wall, so that we will get a full view of the garden, with the steel post supporting a flat roof.

Have any of you done anything similar, looking for advice, pitfalls, costing anything :)

Thanks

Yes - we have just finished a similar extension but with bifolds on both sides of the corner. Initially we were going to get an aluminium corner covering, but the post had to bigger than I expected and so we went with brick in the end, and I'm pleased we did - it looks more in keeping with the original house. If you want the corner post to be as small as possible then press your structural engineer as to how small he is comfortable with, as there was a lot of headroom built into ours. Also get them to draw it right on the outer skin of the walls.

Thanks for the input.

Origin do postless corners if you want an uninterrupted view ?

LucasLDN · 05/09/2017 18:49

We've just done this.... in fact doors were fitted this morning. 3.2m and 2m bifolds either side of a 100mmx100mm corner post.

Ideally the post needs to line up with the outer skin of the cavity wall as debunked says (ours couldn't due to the steel beam construction above so had to be built up with timber for the doors to fix to).

The post was intended to be clad in the same aluminium as the doors but now it's been built up we might box the internal corner with plasterboard.

We went with Shuco doors as we were impressed with a friend's set.

I wish, as i understood postless would be quite expensive

@LucasLDN do you have any snaps of the installation. Also how much was the costing?

Thanks

We are just in the process of doing this. We've had the drawings back from the structural engineer and are just debating what and how to clad the corner post. Debunked did you brick all the way round the post? I'd also appreciate any pictures showing what you did with the corner as our builder is currently a bit unsure what to do.
Cost wise I got a few quotes for two doors (approx 2.3m wide each) and they varied from £5150 to £7500 installed. The steels are probably going to be another £700.

@Jenks81 our builder also had to build our steel up with wooden frame the same as LucasLDN. So the outer two sides of the corner post were clad in brick and the inside is plasterboard and painted the colour of our internal walls. We also went for Schuco doors. We used Euroaluminium to supply and fit and they were great.

Pics of examples of each attached (neither is our house!)

Our doors were circa £4K and £2.5k installed, sourced by the bifolding door factory in Croydon (would recommend).

The outside corner will be clad in aluminium. It's. It fitted yet as a slightly longer piece was required.

The internal corner I think we may end up plasterboarding and painting white to match walls and ceiling. Think this will lighten it and make it feel more architectural.

Hope the photos are helpful!

Thanks @poster LucasLDN

Could you pass me the details of the Croydon firm who did it for you.

Cheers

Bit of an old thread but I'll ask anyway Lucas is that corner post made of steel and going up to a steel lintel? I'm trying to have the same thing myself but I'm unsure how the roof will be supported?
