Electrical diagram/plan for old wiring 🤔

Please help me and DP - does such a thing exist?

We need our electrics done, I suggested an EICR report to start us off with a better understanding. DP is insisting we need a diagram of our existing electrics. We're in a a very old house, covered in many different wiring attempts over the decades.

My thought is that no electrician can really know where everything is to draw a plan, without tearing the house apart. You get plans drawn for rewires/new work. Getting someone in to document our old wiring seems pointless especially when it's likely to change, and they'll give us as much written info in the EICR.

But then I'm pretty clueless - is it electricians who provide the electrical diagrams, or someone else?

Better to get in 3 recommended electricians and ask what their plan of action would be given your budget and requirements.
Go with the one you feel most comfortable with.
If you knew exactly what the best course of action was you'd do it all yourself!

PS an electrician can produce a topological diagram by measuring the resistances to each accessory from the main consumer unit and the furthest point. However it probably won't be much help to you unless you're the electrician.

Thanks John, getting multiple quotes as you've suggested
