oil boiler making whooshing noise every 5 seconds

Our house is wood fired but we have a back up oil boiler which kicks in if there isn't enough hot water from the furnace. Ive just switched it on and the boiler is making a loud whooshing sound every few seconds . This is separate from the normal background noise you can hear when the water is being heated.

Do I need to turn it off and get someone in to look at it?

Do you have enough oil in?

Newtssuitcase · 01/09/2017 07:17

Yes half a tank unless the tank reader is faulty

I know almost nothing about these things but my gas combi boiler does a v frequent whooshing noise when it doesn't have enough pressure in it, we have to top up the pressure.

bleed the highest radiator in the house. Does water squirt out forecefully and without dying away?

MargotsDevil · 01/09/2017 19:35

So is it actually firing or just making the noise? I had this recently and it was a sensor needing replaced - so the boiler couldn't tell there was oil there. Wasn't a big job though.

Its firing up and you can hear the constant noise from that but then every five seconds or so there is a whoosh sound. If I stand outside near the vent I can smell something chemically too.

I'll go and buy a key and bleed the radiator and see what happens.

If that doesn't work it does sound a bit like mine did!
