Kitchen layout help please. Long narrow island - 4m x 80cm - good idea or not?

Re doing my kitchen 5m x 7m.
Row of units along back wall (6m, 1m for door in corner) to house all appliances and sink

Planning a long narrow island - 4m x 80cm - centred along the 7m width. as this will look out to garden across dining table (opp wall all glazed). Curved ends and space at front for stools to go under. Island base units will be shallow (40cm) on kitchen side to accommodate.

Want the island to be wood, used for prep, serving up socialising - not cooking or washing.

My current island is 1m deep, stainless steel, has a sink & drainer (dirty plates/pans) waterfall edges - and I hate it as it is hard to keep clean and tidy, antisocial as cant gather around due to waterfall sides and cold due to SS.

Hoping my new island will address all these issues - but please tell me if anyone can spot something else which will piss me off with the new layout....

The 40cm units - you'll have a long run of shallow cabinets. Have you thought what you will store where?

YorkshireTea86 · 31/08/2017 08:19

Why 80cm? At 5m I'd have though the room was wide enough to do 90cm at least then you could have pan drawers all the way along on the working side and still have 30cm hangover for seating.

yumyumpizza · 31/08/2017 08:36

Sounds like it might look a bit odd being so long and thin? Have you got a diagram or links to something similar?

namechangedtoday15 · 31/08/2017 10:38

Also think the dimensions will look slightly odd. Do you have any images?

another20 · 31/08/2017 11:55

I dont have any images - I will try and draw it out and upload shortly.

I could go to 90cm - only another 10cm to get proper pan drawers thats a good idea - thanks.

I dont like my deep (1m) island at the moment and want to make sure that there is plenty of circulation space around kitchen table and thru kitchen to garden and out to laundry/utility/boot-room to the side which is where the traffic flows rather than front door.

Would it work to have a shaped island? Middle section 90cm end sections narrower?

another20 · 31/08/2017 12:14

I was def doing to do both ends curved - so 3m x80/90 and the last 50cm on each end curved.

Agree 90 is better. 60 for units and 2 for overhang then 28 overhang for seating is sufficient. Mine is that configuration but only 2.1m long and is well proportioned for the rest of the kitchen but your length and orientation sound fine for yours. What will the worktop material be? I'm not sure about the curved edges at all but I think that's just personal preference for straight lines and 90° corners rather than any practical issue.

I want to go for some sort of warm reclaimed wood

I've got a 4m Long Island but it's 1.2 wide. We have 2x 60cm cupboards (narrow ones, perfect for dumping mail inside) on the seating side and then 2.8m seating. That's quite a lot of seat space (3 settings) and even if 3 people sit there it's a weird feel as you are in a line. Would you be doing seating all the way along?
It works as a social space if I'm making something on one side and a couple of people are sitting chatting with me. Anymore and I'd feel like an interview.

another20 · 31/08/2017 15:26

Yes thats why I hate my existing island - everyone on one side in a line -
me on the other - feels anti social because of the waterfall edges blocking, the SS material (cold) and depth. Whereas with the idea of the narrower wooden island and curved ends will be to put stools just on one end so 3-4 could eat/perch and interact properly. Wouldnt put stools all along. I thought I would use under island storage for recycling and bins - love the idea of a post box type opening to shove all paperwork in!

I think I want my kitchen to look and feel like a trendy gastro bar....industrial and reclaimed vintage materials

Oh that makes sense I guess I didn't read that properly. Will be nicer for having a coffee etc sitting at an end more like a table. My parents have a kidney shaped island (but it comes out the wall - don't think it's technically an island) and it's really nice and in wood. Works well for sitting at, there's almost always people sitting at it so think that would be a great space.

Landy10 · 31/08/2017 19:29

Oh that houzz picture is amazing! Makes me want to redo my kitchen (which was only done 3 years ago Grin)

namechangedtoday15 · 31/08/2017 20:11

It might be an idea to draw it to scale to show us. I think those pics are lovely but all the islands look to be much wider than 80cm. Also how do you envisage the seating at one end - 80cm isn't really wide enough for 2 stools side by side?
