Ideas for small bedroom with raised bit in it? (Stairs underneath)

Hello,
It seems fairly common for a third bedroom in semi detached houses round here to have the stairs protruding slightly (two or three feet) into the smallest bedroom. Often a cupboard has been built into this, but in our new house it has been left open. This makes the room look bigger but it's hard to think what to do with the space - it's just a dumping ground for toys at the moment!
Does anyone have this and have ideas about how to use it?
It's the room of a primary aged boy.
Thanks

We had a bed built over ours, not stupid expensive but a brilliant use of space.

We have similar - H chopped and played around with a wooden framed mid/high sleeper so that one end has no legs (shorter legs) so that it sits on the box if you see what I mean (think he also attached it to wall so weight not all on the box). Makes the room look much bigger. Will try to find photo.

Yes, two options really wardrobe built on top or bed built over it, we went with the wardrobe as we needed it for clothes but both can work well depending on overall width/length of room. Sounds a bit daft but use masking tape to mark out bed and wardrobe combos on the floor and see which will work best for you space wise. If it's common in house round yours have a look at rightmove sold prices on your street and have a nose at how other people have done it.

We got a bed from a company that does beds to fit over the stairwell box (no DIY talent here). It's well made and is a great use of space.
They'll make to any height

Ooh sci that's more or less what we have. My H made a desk over the bulkhead bit and moved the ladder to the short (foot) end which makes the space under the bed much more useable.

These are brilliant, thanks so much. All I'd thought of was sticking a bean bag on it and pretending he would sit there and read!

Sadly not Mistress and besides, he's got too many other jobs here Smile

We couldn't put a high-sleeper bed over ours as it would mean the bed is across the window. We bought a sideboard unit from Ikea and mounted that on top of the plinth, fixed to the wall so it cannot topple. We thought about a wardrobe but our son has no clothes that need to be hung up, so shelves were better.
