UPVC Sash Windows

Hi all

Another UPVC question for you all.

We've just bought a small flat for our daughter, with big old sash windows in the front bedroom. When we bought it the survey told us the windows would need replaced sooner rather than later. I don't think anyone will buy a one bed flat on the basis of original sash windows so I'm not too concerned about the impact of installing UPVC ones will have on the resale. The windows at the back of the flat are all UPVC already.
It is on a busy road, so noise is a big consideration. We were going to replace them with UPVC sashes but have been told that, while good for keeping heat in, noise reduction isn't their strong suit, as they slide rather than seal.

Does anyone have any experience with UPVC sash windows, particularly relating to noise reduction? It would be shame to lose the sash look altogether if it can be helped.

If you're set on replacing the windows then would you consider timber sash? They're much nicer than UPVC.
