Hi everyone,

The house nextdoor has just been bought about 6 weeks ago and they seem to be doing a lot of building/decoration work on it and the garden but aren't living there yet. I think they are going to rent it out.

Do they have any sort of responsibility to inform us if they are going to rent it out or would it just be a case of common courtesy?

Thanks!

I own a rental house (inherited it) and told the neighbours that it was being done up and would be rented out.

I also gave them a phone number (of the lettings agent) to call if they had any problems with the new tenants.

Common courtesy and could even be useful.

We rent my dm's house out to a lovely family.

Our last house, which we owned we had to move from to get away from neighbours from hell who also owned their house.

Shitty neighbours own or rent. Lovely neighbours own or rent.

I own my own home. Middle aged owner neighbours one side and the house is falling down due to neglect, the garden is a tip. The other side are currently home owners who spend their lives ripping the house and garden apart noisily improving it. Prior to that it was rented out three times, one of the renter's was a twat, the others were lovely, so in my experience, I'd much rather renters as neighbours.

BackforGood · 16/08/2017 19:53

Ok all renters on here then I see!!

Er, no. I've owned for 27 yrs now. Hmm

You haven't answered what you would do with the information, if they had come and told you they were going to let the house out.

purpledonkey · 16/08/2017 20:01

I'm a homeowner.

You're an arse hole.

daydreamnation · 16/08/2017 20:02

I'm a home owner. Have a rental next door, lovely lovely neighbours.
I'd pick them any day over a patronising, small minded home owner like you.

MrsJoyOdell · 16/08/2017 20:04

Just so you know snob OP, we rent and we moved here from our last place as our home owning neighbours were antisocial arseholes. A bit like you seem to be.

SteppingOnToes · 16/08/2017 20:17

I'm a homeowner but live in a rented house due to work commitments. I have a 4 bed farmhouse with 5 acres of land that I rent out and I live in a 2 bed terrace local to work. There are many reasons people rent...

Emaboo22 · 17/08/2017 12:57

I lived next door to seven sets of different tenants over a ten year period - no problems at all. All were lovely.
Landlord sells house - homeowners move in and suddenly it all changes and I now have the neighbours from hell and I'm moving.

So do not be so quick to judge!

MumIsRunningAMarathon · 17/08/2017 13:28

It's probably going to a 'student' house

You'll be fine op! Grin

LazyDailyMailJournos · 17/08/2017 13:45

Ok all renters on here then I see!!
Nope. Have owned my own home for almost 15 years now.

Maybe I'm just the better person then as I would be courteous enough to inform my nextdoor neighbours if I was going to rent my house out, I just think it's polite
Perhaps you are, but there is no legal obligation for them to tell you anything at all. Even if they did, what would you do with the information? If you didn't like the fact they were going to rent it out would you complain? Demand that they don't? Stamp your feet?! Perhaps you could go the whole hog and put your best professional sad-face on for the local paper?

And no I have never lived in a rented house before
Well good for you, because clearly never having rented a property means that you are some kind of superior person and we should all defer to you.

I confess I am rather hoping that the people who end up moving in next door to the OP are the owners rather than renters, and that they are the antithesis of what she considers to be Decent Neighbour Material.

TroysMammy · 17/08/2017 15:36

I own my home outright. I have neighbours who are long term renters, really lovely people. It's the person not the circumstance that can cause problems and I still think you are a snob.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 17/08/2017 15:39

I'm assuming you must live in a "rough" area if you think anyone wanting to rent there would be unsalubrious.

Maybe move somewhere nicer.
