Hi. I've just moved into a new rented property and want to put a lightshade up in the living room. However, I can't make head nor tail of this light fitting. Apologies in advance - am not v good at this sort of thing and Google has not helped. What is this fitting and how do I get it apart to put on a shade? Thanks!

Do you think it had some sort of chandelier there before ? Just looking at the chain and you normally have a chain with a heavy type light fitting . There doesn't seem to be anything to unscrew does there ?

I guess you've tried to unscrew it? The photo looks like the wide bit at the top might unscrew, there's a line around the bottom edge of it.

I thought it must have been a chandelier type light too... I have no clue what to do with it or how to get a lightshade on...

Yes I have tried but it just doesn't go anywhere...

tilt it over and photograph the top.

It looks to me like you could remove it and wire in an ordinary pendant.
