What is a light fitting?!

Google isn't helping me! Is it the lamp shade that you buy? Or the bulb? Or the bit of wire attached to the ceiling? I want to take my lampshades with me

I always thought the fitting was the bit (in the ceiling) that determines what type of bulb you need...

The fitting is the bit screwed to the wall or ceiling.

The bit that receives the light bulb, the rose around it or the switch on the wall.
