Carpet - cut pile vs loop pile?!

Hi! Hoping for a bit of practical illumination here. We live in a two up two down cottage which we are currently renovating. We want to put carpet right through but receive conflicting advice about using cut pile / loop pile carpet. The throughfare accounts for a large proportion of the floor space simply because our house is so small so it will get a lot of wear - 2 adults, 2 children, front door opens straight into living room. What is your experience of the general wear and tear of carpet in high usage areas? Any suggestions?! Thanks.

Have you got a cat or dog?

You'll need a dense and durable carpet for heavy wear areas - and a cut pile if you have pets.

I've tended to go for a heavy weight 80/20 Heather twist - like this.

Consider having a section of coir doormat inset at the front door and also have some sort of scraper type mat outside. The coir should be fitted so you can slide it out to shake any stones, etc out of it, but you can vacuum it too.

Randomlygenerated - interesting to see your choice as this is one I shortlisted, seemed a very reasonable price too. Thanks for your suggestion too Wowfudge - I like the coir doormat inset suggestion.
