Leaving a note

fdp86 · 05/08/2017 06:50

I'd like to leave a note for our buyers for when they move in along with some prosecco and a card. Think it will be a nice touch and would like to know what useful info you think I should include. So far I've thought of bin dates and neighbour's names. SmileSmileSmile

Local (good) takeaway numbers?

wowfudge · 05/08/2017 07:15

Any trades people you've used and would recommend.

queenofthedump · 05/08/2017 07:20

Any quirks of the house (how to open the dodgy kitchen window for example)

Wheelycote · 05/08/2017 07:24

If the house has any funny noises, doors that can be shut in a funny way

dudsville · 05/08/2017 07:25

We did this. Bin dates. The odd and quirky locations of any switches. Manuals for things like the oven. Take away menus. We moved from a big city to a small village. The people we bought from included a sweet little book of the history of the area and stuff from the local information centre and names of tradesmen they'd used for decades!

BigGreenOlives · 05/08/2017 07:27

I wouldn't leave them a bottle of Prosecco & a card, it's a business transaction.

Ifailed · 05/08/2017 07:27

When I did this, I mentally went through the house from loft to cellar, pointing out where the light switch for the loft was, where the water stop cock, meters etc were. I also explained some of the more quirky things (the little tap things for shutting off the hot and cold water for the shower were in another room).
Listed bin collection times, warning about parking restrictions and also left contact details for all the local trade people I trusted (plumber, painter etc)
Finally left a couple of mugs, T-bags, fresh fruit etc and some milk in the fridge, along with a bottle of fiz and cheap plastic glasses.

Gizlotsmum · 05/08/2017 07:32

Aw big green that's sad. I was touched that we were left a bottle of wine and a note when we moved in. I won't be doing it for our buyers as they are buy to let... but would if it was someone buying it to live in.

InfiniteSheldon · 05/08/2017 07:36

I also left cans of paint in the shed with a list of which one to use in each room for touchups

Gizlotsmum · 05/08/2017 07:38

Ooh yes the paint was a god send ( plus we have loads left over)

Bellaposy · 05/08/2017 07:44

I'm leaving a list of what's in the garden and where. The first year after we bought I didn't want to make any changes to the garden not knowing what was there. Also contact details for neighbours, bin dates, gardener' s number.

nodogsinthebedroom · 05/08/2017 07:55

Tell them about the ghost child living in the attic.

N0tNowBernard · 05/08/2017 07:58

Ah OP what a lovely idea!

The ghost child in the attic made me laugh!

imsorryiasked · 05/08/2017 08:42

Ours left us a folder with all the appliance manuals etc.
Cans of shitty mustard and maroon leftover paint.
And bizarrely a video player down the back of the kitchen cupboards which we found after ten years when ripping them out.

katymac · 05/08/2017 08:47

We have just left:
Notes about bins/stopcocks and lightswitches
Leftover paint/carpet/laminate
Instructions/guarantees
Spare keys
& a small cd/radio we couldn't get out of a cupboard without destroying it

RuskBaby · 05/08/2017 08:48

Ours left some local take away menus, manuals, a full bin and a shed load of dirt. My sister received a card and champagne. I know which I would prefer. Lovely thought OP.

Heroicallylost · 05/08/2017 10:57

How to turn the water/heating on if it's quirky. Would have appreciated that when moving into a house with the world's most complicated programmer in the middle of winter!

JamOrCreamFirst · 05/08/2017 11:00

I wouldn't leave neighbours' names and contact details.

tessa1987 · 06/08/2017 09:12

I've done this myself - I think it's a really nice touch after stressful moving day.

Mainly covered above but I would include:

  • bin/recycling days
  • suppliers we've used
  • names of neighbours
  • a folder of all manuals including things like last service reports for boiler
  • instructions to turn on/off heating
  • location of stopcock
  • list of paint colours in each room & any left over pots
  • some takeaway menus
  • the last meter readings
Dumdedumdum · 07/08/2017 00:12

I would have left a note and some wine but they pissed us about so much they were lucky we even cleaned before leaving.
