How to make room more cosy? Tips please

We've got a room st the back of our house which we use as a family/living room (but not the main living room. It is painted white with oak flooring so basically a blank canvas. As much as I like the extra space, I spend little time there because it just doesn't have a 'homely' feel to it. I've added nice curtains, sofa, cushions and lamps, is there anything obvious I've missed which will improve the feel of the room?

A nice fluffy rug. I love mine but it is now getting full of baby dribble.

Do you have a photo? When would you use this room as opposed to main living room i.e. Is it a more relaxed or formal space? Would putting the tv in here encourage you to use it? What direction does it face? I think a big part of what makes a room feel homely is it being used and having proper family stuff in it. Not necessarily mess but magazines, books, a throw to keep warm etc. I would consider changing the white walls too

Another possibility for you really don't use it is to knock it through to a room that you do use

A lovely chest or blanket box? Unique art on the walls always helps. Show us a pic!

Throws and a collage of family photos.

I went to my aunts and she has a similar area where one wall is covered in different types, sizes and shapes of hanging hearts. It was lovely.

A nice plant.

Subtle lighting using lovely table lamps, floor lamps, what have you. Throws. Rugs. Lots of pictures on the walls. Plants and books.

Choose a paint with a yellow sunshine base colour. I find pure white makes cool rooms much chillier. Add rugs or carpet. Plus throws and soft furnishings. Never leather.

Sorry I tried to reply last night but my phone froze whilst it was loading. Some great replies, thanks. The room leads off the kitchen and is to be used as a TV room. I'm definitely going to buy a throw, I hadn't thought about that. Also will try and get another lamp, some candles, plants and pictures. I like the idea of a picture collage or framed kid's artwork. I'm going to think about books as they give a really cosy feel but I haven't got the wall space so maybe some shelves. mumbod I love your style, that's exactly what I meant by cosy!
