Moving to Orpington

Hi, we are a family of 4 ( with 2 year old twins) and moving from London to Orpington. Looking for mostly good schools and a decent area where little ones can grow up. We are seeing a house in Elmcroft Road in Perrry Hall School's catchment area. Would you be kind enough to give some insight about the area. Also, any good day care over there? Penguin day care have vacancy as of now and I am considering it. Thoughts please? What areas/streets to be cautious about? I read a lot about moped thefts and other disturbing activities in and around Orpington. Please can you share with me what I need to be aware of before moving in. Thank you all in advance.

Why Orpington?! There are nicer options in the vicinity:-

Bickley
Bromley
Keston
Chislehurst
Pets wood
Biggin hill and westerham are nice but a bit further out

Looking at the old Orpington thread it is interesting reading. Since that thread started the council has spent millions regenerating the town centre. There's a new, modern, library, an Odeon cinema, premier inn, Bella pasta, Nando's and Creams. The high street still has plenty of charity Shops, an Iceland and a pound stretcher but it is better.
Other people can help on areas, I don't live in Orpington myself but the arrival of the Odeon has been great, a cinema cheaper and closer than Bluewater.

Bromley is due to get a new multiscreen cinema next year. Agree there are nicer places in borough of Bromley than Orpington. What's your budget?

Thanks for your suggestions and comments. We are looking for under £400,000. We have finalised a house in Elmcroft Road BR6, in Perry Hall School's catchment area. I am yet to finalise on the day care for my twins. Do you have any suggestion on that please, in BR6 and BR5 area.
