Cleaning grout off tiles

My OH, who I'm in the process of splitting up from, is absolutely pants at finishing just about any DIY project he starts.

Consequently, we've a lot of tiles in our house which are messy with old, hard grouting (he never cleans up after himself and left smears of grouting all over the place).

Have any of you faced a similar problem with removing old grout from tile surfaces? I've been waiting for at least three years for him to finish the job, but now we need to sell up and I'm not waiting for him any longer! Please tell me your magic solutions!

Ive found that grout will come off with a lot of elbow grease and a pan scourer. If it was a combined tile adhesive and grout it does take on water and soften if you are able to soak it. last resort for me would be wallpaper scraper if you are able to do it without scratching

keep it wet to reduce scratching and maybe try wet wire wool in an area you cant see?

Water, pan scrubber sponge and elbow grease. Do a small area at a time. You can scratch large bits off with a knife, wallpaper scraper or finger nail. Careful though not to scratch the tiles.
