Can I ask how standard it would be to check for this before purchase on an older property?

Surveyor (structural survey) didn't check as couldn't lift floorboards and vendors have refused permission for a check - property is vacant.

Is this a reasonable thing to want to do?

An experienced surveyor would probably recognise the smell as soon as he walked through the front door.

Do you have reason to suspect it?

Not really, beyond paranoia and a general lack of confidence in our survey
