How do I go about getting a shower fitted?

Please forgive the stupid question but I am a bit clueless when it comes to DIY! I currently just have a bath and a sink in my bathroom, and want to get an electric shower fitted over the bath. Who do I need to fit it? A plumber? An electrician? Both? Also, do I buy the shower first (budget is tight - I've been looking at Argos ones,) or do I consult plumber/electrician before purchasing and take their advice?

Lastly, does anyone have any idea how much this is likely to cost me in total?

TIA for any advice you can offer Flowers

For an electric shower you will need a cable that runs from the shower to your consumer unit, it has to have its own fuse. Depending where the consumer unit is in relation to your bathroom they may have to lift floorboards (they did in mine)

The electric cable will determine the maximum kw for the shower. I believe my shower is a 10kw or 9.5kw, Triton, it was about £150.

I would speak to a plumber, if he/she isn't qualified to do the electrical side of it they normally have a mate who is who they work with. Start there and then work out whether you want an electric shower or a mixer shower.

We have both a mixer shower (en-suite) which takes water from a hot water tank and then the electric shower (bathroom) for the children.

But we had it installed when we fitted a new bathroom ourselves, so we had access to the wall, plumbed in the shower (Dh is very handy) tiled the wall (that bit was me) then the electrician hooked up the electric cable he had already laid but not connected up.

Thank you Potatoes. I guess the first step is to contact a plumber then and get them to come and take a look and give me a quote. I'll ask around for recommendations.
