Is this a weird thing to do?

We've had some quotes in from various suppliers, but our builder will be project managing our extension. Is it worth asking him to liaise with them directly, negotiate on price, and split whatever price difference he manages to get with us?

Eh? Won't you just end up paying him extra for a job he's already supposed to be doing? Why not just ask him if, in his experience, the quotes look okay for the work involved.

Sorry - I wasn't clear. It's stuff he wouldn't be doing, like fabricating and installing steel windows.

I think if you mention 'splitting the difference' you may be leaving yourselves open to being taken for a ride. What's the point of getting a good deal if you then give away half the saving?

Fair enough - thanks. It was DP's idea - he asked me to run it past the MN jury to ascertain if he was being daft. I will tell him he is.
