What's the etiquette with paying builders

We are nearly at the end of our kitchen refurb. The builder (whose project managed it all) and electrician both gave prices for the work.

Do we ask for a final bill or just pay what they quoted? Never done this before!

Ask for a final bill. If he wants paying by internet bank transfer, send a tenner across, ask him to confirm receipt then pay the rest. Makes sure you have the numbers right!

they will both have long lists of "extras" when they will claim you changed your mind or asked for something more.

Change control is where the money is made.

Ask for a final account and scrutinise it deeply. Ask for explanations for anything unclear.

A common trick, when you ask for a blue x instead of a white one, is to add on the blue but not deduct the white.
