How much diy is really possible?

I recently did a Saturday college course in diy and though it was a bit of a shambles, one thing it taught me is that having a go and gaining confidence is the way to go. Bit how realistic is doing it yourself with home improvements, and what can I hope to cut my teeth on realistically?!

I'd like to redo our tiny bathroom. Obviously I can't do plumbing but would like to think I could save us some money by doing the ripping out etc? What sort of jobs can a competent diy-er expect to complete?

Order your own stuff - we saved £600 on the suite taps and shower plus different shops have different things
One showers were cheaper - one bath cheaper etc

But - plumbers don't like it because they make money off the suite and claim VAT back

Local shop tiles are £29 sq m - online £9.80 Sq M for the same ones

We stripped the walls - that's was a saving of £200

Can't do electrics plumbing or tiling - so limited savings

Tiling was surprisingly straightforward :) thanks for the tips

OH can do basic plumbing and electrics.
Together we have
Tiled a bathroom
Reinstated picture rails.
Replaced glazing
Brought down ceilings
Opened up fireplaces
Installed a kitchen and bathroom
Created off street parking
Replaced the water supply pipe from the street up to the house.
Replaced bannisters

I have done rolling before - but I wasn't happy with how it turned out - I'm better at removing stuff then putting it back together

Well. I put up a bathroom cabinet. Which fell off the wall 5 mins later Shock

Hmm. Didn't do much for my confidence!
