Do I need pelmets and/or cornices??

Hi all, wading through endless decisions with my new kitchen and the issue of pelmets/cornices have come up. I'm getting a matt look modern kitchen (I live in a fairly boxy flat without any original features), with low profile handles (Howdens Stockbridge - pic attached). I'm not overly bothered about extra bits of wood, especially as I think they better suit a more traditional looking kitchen, but are these the essential finishing touch that I need? TIA!

I don't think you need them for the look of the kitchen but having gaps between the cupboards and the ceiling would drive me nuts because of grease/dirt catching there.

We recently redid our kitchen in a more traditional style (house is old) and we put in crown molding over the cupboards and then continued it around the rest of the walls to match.

We didn't.

We also therefore didn't need side panels.

Modern kitchen too.

No but do take the cupboards up to the ceiling
