What colour primer?

I'm going to paint our garage door with Sandtex Bay Tree. It is currently a dark red colour.

I've got a choice of white or dark grey primer. Which one should I use?

Does Bay Tree mean dark green?

Primer is for bare wood or metal. You can use a dark grey primer on any patches that are bare after you have scraped and sanded. Apart from Universal Primers, it will be a different formula for the metal and for the wood. Pay extra attention to the bottom and the top of the doors, which are usually neglected so rot first.

If you mean undercoat, grey will kill the old colour better.

White undercoat is most common, because most people have whitish things that they intend to paint white again, and it is OK for pale, or similar, colours, where showing-through will not be a problem.

Sandtex Bay Tree is a sage green colour.

The garage door is metal and the paint is in good condition (not chipped or flaking).

I was looking at the white or dark grey to cover the dark red/burgundy paint on it at the moment.

Then you need an undercoat not a primer.

From the same manufacturer in a compatible range. The topcoat tin instructions will say.

Dark grey.

My bay tree is much darker than my sage bush.

Getting confused with primer and undercoat...

The pack copy says to apply one coat of Sandtex 10 Year Primer Undercoat.

The pack instructions suggest it is for wood but that it can be used as an undercoat on primed metal.

If your door is already painted it does not need a primer except on bare patches.
