Dos and don'ts for extensions

Can anyone point me in the direction of a good website summarising what you can and can't do when extending a house?

I'm wondering for a 1 or 2-storey extension, how close can you build up to the boundary line and how far can you go backwards towards the rear of the property?

Any other particular restrictions?
