Restoring victorian tiles

We have uncovered what appear to be original victorian tiles in our bathroom. These were previously tiled over. Any tips on how to clean them up and make them water tight, or is this a lost cause? Anything not to do?

Google the Tiledoctor. Amazing results. Well worth saving that floor.
