As part of renovation, i want to get take out the fire places and hearths. And was going to have wall mounted fire places.
Now i fancy a wood burner, can i have a wood burner with out a hearth?

Prob not - though it will depend where the door is.
When you open the door ash falls out.

I wouldn't have thought so - they generate a huge amount of heat and need to stand on something non-combustible; there is also a certain area around the wood burner that needs to be clear of combustibles. May be worth talking to a specialist about your options?

Yes absolutely you can, just google. However they do drop ash when uou clean them or load them up so you need something cleanable underneath.

You also get fake electric ones, which are cleaner. Don't know how good they are though.

Thanks all, am thinking to have it recessed in the existing chimney breast.
Want to avoid hearth as paranoid about toddler falling on it and thought recessed with a guard across would be ok.

Toddler has to learn to cope with hard surfaces, the planet isn't padded.

A woodburner gets tremendously hot and the guard will need to stick out some way. As mentioned you will spill a bit of ash when loading and cleaning.

It's a requirement of building regulations that you need one so no I don't think you can.

Building regs will want a pronounced difference between the floor and the hearth.

Your HETAS fitter will be able to advise.

The photo in the link looks pretty.

BUT Woodburners are very messy, I don't think your walls will be clean like the photos. It will all get very grubby/sooty very quickly.

I think it could also take a lot of work to the chimney to box it in like that. Also, I would be worried that it would make the burner much less efficient with the heat going up the chimney rather than into the room.

Our house already had a Welsh slate hearth and rubber protective edging all round it when we bought it. We've now installed the wood burner but have left the protective edging as it looks a bit like tile and it hasn't occurred to us to remove it! But ours (now 3and 5) have never had issues with falling on it so it's not a huge risk.

Your fire guard will go round the hearth edge while they're very small. My brother managed to hit his head on a marble hearth as an adult, so you could argue for no hard corners at any age!

We have a wood burner in a fireplace with hearth, believe if they are not a cassette type you have to have a fireproof base, also I have found my wood burner very easy to clean, as you have an ash catcher which needs emptying about every four/five days also no issues with soot etc in the room, it's much much cleaner than our coal fire.

I have an inset stove it doesn't make a mess on the walls, there shouldn't be soot around it if it's working properly but you do need something Hearth like underneath, in case of ash.
My parents have limestone tiles- it doesn't need to have raised edges just not be immediately flammable!

We have two wood burners and thought about having an inset one when we had the last one installed, so the engineer explained them. I don't think it's a case they are less efficient, the chimney effectively as a plate in it on the freestanding ones to ensure only the required amount of heat goes up the chimney so, if anything inset would be more efficient.

Agree though you'd need to clean up any ash. Wood burners do get very hot. If you touch the door you will get burned, so you would need a guard.

A woodburner is sealed so no 'smoke' should come into the room. It 'sucks' air in once it is lit (you must have an airbrick or suitable ventilation). When lighting and cleaning there may be a little smoke but you quickly learn how to get it right.
The authorised installer will advise.
