dining room lighting- pendants and wall lighting

dining room being redone- have just ordered 3 pendants for over table - and have 4 wall lights wired in. my question is - with pendants directing light down, do I need my wall lights to face up?

Depends on the room and the effect you want. We have opaque glass wall washers which light up and down. We have a very high vaulted ceiling and we decided not to have pendant lights at all.

There's no picture rail in our dining room so we put the wall lights slightly higher up the walls to get maximum effect.

average size room (ie not huge) with normal ceiling... so pendants are for atmosphere and want wall lights to be more functional--- your wall washers sound useful- will google to see some examples- pendants are black and copper

wall washer would be perfect.... thanks... now- with a very bold pendant (ie black/copper with cream walls) I wonder if cream wall washers would work? so they blended into walls....

Cream sounds lovely. Bear in mind that if you move the table or extend it you need to think where the pendants are going to go - the ones you can adjust up and down could be an idea.

I spent hours looking at wall lights. In the end went for Astro wall lights that have a wall washing effect, lighting both up and down. Have a look at pictures of lights lighting up walls and see what you prefer. It's how I decided in the end. I went for white lights which will be unobtrusive on white walls, but look nice when lit.

Having said that, they're in boxes in the cupboard under the stairs at the moment as the wall will be painted before they are put up. I'm sure they'll look good, tho'
