Help with TV aerial...

Hi

Not sure if this is the right place to post or not!

We have moved into a new build house (a fair few months ago), there is an aerial on the roof and a sky dish. We have Sky downstairs, it works fine.

We have a second TV with build in free view box so thought I'd try and plug that in upstairs. Connected to the aerial socket - no signal at all. Tried the aerial socket downstairs - same outcome.

Is there something really obvious that I'm missing?! What do I need to do next to solve the problem?

Thanks in advance!!!

Are you sure that the aerial on the roof belongs to your house (i.e. it's not a neighbours), and that it's connected to the aerial cabling in your house? I'm about to buy my third new build and none of them have come with aerials: I've always had to install my own and connect it to the cable the builder puts in.

If you're certain that it's yours and properly connected, it probably needs adjusting to point towards the transmitter.

Yes I'm pretty sure it's ours, when I say new build it's a 2011 house, we are the second people to live in it.

Going to go and have a look to see if it's pointing in the same direction as the others on the street...

Was it set up for the old analogue signal rather than digital?

emmabrown123 · 13/06/2017 14:15

I'm not sure but assuming set up for digital as the earliest it was put up was 2012

Op. You have tried to tune it in yes? It doesn't just show TV programmes

CondensedMilkSarnies · 13/06/2017 14:18

Watching with interest, I have the same problem .

emmabrown123 · 13/06/2017 14:21

Yes have tried tuning several times. Occasionally I'll get a few channels but when I go on to them they just say 'No digital signal' or a couple of times I've had a few seconds of a distorted blocky picture

Do you have an option for air/cable before you start tuning?

MissKittyCat · 13/06/2017 22:43

I live in a newish build house with aerial sockets in multiple rooms. The aerial sockets only work when there is a booster plugged in between the TV and socket in the living room. This sends power to the junction box in the loft to make all the sockets work. I only found this out when I got an aerial company round when I couldn't get a signal from the aerial.

UpLighter · 13/06/2017 23:01

If you have sockets in multiply rooms you almost certainly have a booster/splitter box somewhere which will need to be plugged into the mains. It is normally in the loft.

How many arial plug holes are there in you lounge?

Monkeybunkey · 14/06/2017 12:31

I had aerial sockets upstairs in my new build and to make them work I had to plug a splitter in from the main aerial socket to the one next to it in the lounge on the ground floor. If you've got a redundant aerial socket, that may be what you need to do.

emmabrown123 · 15/06/2017 07:07

There are two aerial sockets in the house I think - one in the lounge, one in the bedroom. Neither seem to work.

At the risk of sounds stupid - what's a splitter and where can I get one?!!

Splitter: www.maplin.co.uk/p/uhf-tv-signal-splitter-1x-plug-to-2x-sockets-jm13p
The one I had was like a loop, so you plugged the splitter into the main aerial socket and one of the 2 outputs then had a short lead on it which plugged into the socket next to it which activated the upstairs aerial points. The TV aerial lead then plugged into the other output on the splitter. Hope that makes sense! I don't think I've got a picture any more as I sold the house a few years ago.
