Painted/ stripped/ new doors - period house

Hi all

We have an early Edwardian (Victorian style) house and all the interior doors are stripped pine - I think the previous owners were big fans. Some are original I think and some are dodgy newer ones, they don't all match. All are flimsy and badly fitting. I know that stripped pine wasn't a thing in Edwardian times and would happily have painted doors... would it be a tragedy to get rid of them all and replace with more solid new ones?

If they are flimsy and don't fit, then take them down and advertise them on freecycle or gumtree freebies to see if someone else makes use of them.

It is a massive shame to replace them if they are period features though.

You might be able to get better quality period replacements via a reclamation yard or eBay. Make a list of the correct measurements including the thickness. Save any locks and handles that seem to be original - you can usually match those up.

I wouldn't take out period doors - you might not like them in their current state, but overall period features add value to the house.
Stripped pine may not be authentic Edwardian, but neither is white paint.... most likely they would have been wood grained i.e. painted to simulate better quality dark wood than the cheap knotty pine they actually are.

I cannot stand cheap pine doors stripped back. They are not authentic in that condition. Look at what the house would have had. Go with a modern version. You can't keep tat just for the sake of it. You can replace front doors so why not internal ones? It will make your house look more expensive and cared for. I think you may have problems with reclaim. They are all different sizes and probably won't fit.
