Prepay boiler ran out of gas, now won't work even though topped up

The make is Vaillant.

Mansplainer was here last week and I vaguely remember him telling me to something or other if this happened, but he didn't fucking tell me it would happen!

Anyone know what to do? I've tried resetting boiler and holding red button on meter for a minute?

Any ideas?

Assuming it's part of the ecotec range and you have a fault code either F28 or F29 there will be a reset button with a picture of a flame with a cross through it. Press this once and report back

MumIsRunningAMarathon · 10/06/2017 13:53

Is it the meter or boiler..... 2 different things

Meter issue, call the gas supplier
Boiler issue, refer to manual or google your make/model for troubleshooting guide

Itsoverpeople · 10/06/2017 13:54

Post a picture of the boiler if you can.

LedaP · 10/06/2017 14:00

So your prepay meter ran out.

You topped up but boiler wont come on?

Do you have any other gas appliances? So you can check the meter is working? If your other gas appliances work, its the boiler.

LedaP · 10/06/2017 14:01

Postes too soon.

If they arent working and it is the meter call your gas supplier.

user1496484020 · 10/06/2017 14:03

There was a fault but once I reset it the fault went away.

Basically yer man said this would happen if you don't hold the red button on the METER when you top up.

He told me to hold something or press something until I can hear a valve open but I'm fucked if I can remember what it was he told me to hold.

I can however very accurately turn the dial on the thermostat....... 5 minutes was spent on that!

It's a combi boiler and the boiler kicks in when the hot tap is turned on but the water doesn't get hot.

I have never heard this before. I used to work in prepay at BG.

user1496484020 · 10/06/2017 14:07

It's Ecotec Plus 831

Well the boiler is no longer showing a fault, so anyone know what it is I'm supposed to press on the meter?

But he WAS trying to equip you for the eventuality that it might?

Sounds like helpful, relevant information. Maybe you should call him, whoever he is?

user1496484020 · 10/06/2017 14:14

He doesn't work weekends. No other gas appliances.

We have to do this with our prepay meter when it runs out. When we top it up after it's run out we get a message on the meter which says something like 'Gas applicances off. Hold button A' We then have to hold the button until we hear a 'donk' sound and that is the gas safety switch. We then reset the boiler.

Have you tried taking your card out of the meter, reinserting it and then seeing if you get a similar message?

SerfTerf · 10/06/2017 14:17

What message is the meter displaying?

Did you get that "whoosh-clunk" sound that run-out prepayment gas meters give when they're topped up (assuming they're still the same as they always were)?

donajimena · 10/06/2017 14:17

Have you reset it? I had to reset my vaillant if it ran out whilst in use

LedaP · 10/06/2017 14:18

I dont get how the boiler is getting gas (so kicking in as you say) if the problem is the meter.

I think the issue is the thermostat

But is there any button on the meter labelled 'A'? If so press it it will say 'hold for gas' or similar. Then press a again and hold.

SerfTerf · 10/06/2017 14:19

You need to work out if the gas supply is reconnected properly. Then you can move on to what kind of reset the boiler might be needing.

If you have a gas job or gas fire, just try lighting it to check for supply.

MumIsRunningAMarathon · 10/06/2017 14:20

Yes.... that sounds same as our old prepay meter

Did you use the emergency credit up? Because topping up might mean it's gone back onto that instead of being there to use

SerfTerf · 10/06/2017 14:20

HOB

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 10/06/2017 14:21

If the gas ran out you need to press a button and hold it to get it back on. Just putting the card in to top it up won't do it. Put your card in the meter and wait for the message to pop up telling which button to press and hold for gas. After a short period you'll hear a woosh-pop and your meter may beep. The gas is now on.

Your boiler will also need resetting

user1496484020 · 10/06/2017 14:22

"TheSleeperandTheSpindle" That worked!

Check whether the pilot light is still on. If the gas ran out completely you may need to relight it before you get hot water.

user1496484020 · 10/06/2017 14:23

Thanks all! Now the fucking thing is showing I've £9.47 when I've just topped up by £20. Dear oh dear.
